Nobody Puts TV in a Corner

Nobody! Figuratively, anyway. In the literal sense, many people do it and if you’re shopping for a television mount, you’ve probably found designated corner rigs can be pricey. FireFold’s WM-SM-SS-TSE is an affordable, flexible option. Whether you are, in fact, positioning your TV in a corner or you’re trying to accommodate a recessed niche or a wide viewing area, articulating mounts can be just what you need to get the effect you’re looking for. Articulating (or “full motion”) mounts extend from the wall, tilt up and down, and swivel side to side, making them extremely versatile. This one will handle most TVs with screen sizes between 32” and 55” and weights under 88 lbs.

The WM-SM-SS-TSE has a single extension arm that can pull away from the wall up to 22”. Completely folded up, it is less than four inches from the wall. Installation only requires one stud and the mount is small and light enough for a single person to complete the project from start to finish. It comes with full instructions and the hardware for classic wood stud mounting. For masonry or metal studs, you may need different hardware. Once hung, this articulating mount can tilt down 10 degrees and swivel a full 90 degrees side to side.

The Hole Story

The WM-SM-SS-TSE can fit VESA mounting patterns up to 400x200. But what does that mean? How do you know if it will fit your screen? It’s easy if you have your manual, a measuring tape, or the internet! Since you’ve obviously got web access, we’ll start with the latter. A quick query of the search engine of your choice can usually answer your question for you. Just be sure you have your monitor or TV’s exact model number as many manufacturers switch their mounting patterns from year to year. The VESA pattern should also be listed in the specs of your manual. If you don’t have the manual and can’t find the model number, or if you prefer to take a hands-on approach, you can calculate your VESA pattern yourself. Using a tape measure or ruler, measure the distance between the mounting holes on the back of the screen. Measure horizontally and vertically, not diagonally. There should be two numbers, both in millimeters. These numbers will be your VESA pattern.

Signal is as Signal Does

HDMI is a marvel of technology. Digital pulses zoom over delicate wires, bringing you audio and video in sharp clarity and contrast. Paired with the newest LED televisions, it can certainly seem as though little slices of life are being beamed across time and space, directly onto your screen. HDMI is a sprinter, though, and not well-suited to marathon runs. Depending on output strength, cable quality, and a number of other factors, you might find yourself losing signal before you get to where you’re going. Resolution is usually the first to drop, followed by the sound or image. It doesn’t matter how long your cable is- if the signal can’t make it, you’ve got one high-tech jump rope.

Run, Cables! Run!

The job of HDMI repeaters and extenders is to train or push the signal to go farther. There are several different ways to do that. One of the easiest ways is FireFold’s HDMI-EXTEND. This HDMI repeater acts just like a regular coupler with female ports for connecting the ends of two cables. The real magic is on the inside. Using only the native 5V power carried over HDMI, this small and unimposing extender can essentially double the distance you can send your signal. Instead of a mere 50 feet to play with, this coupler can regenerate your signal for 115 feet or you could daisy-chain two of them and increase your run to 165 feet. You don’t have to sacrifice any of the advanced features of HDMI, either. High-definition resolutions, HDCP compliance, and 3D playback are all left intact for the length of your run.

This basic coupler design means there’s no set-up. You just plug in your cables and you’re ready to go. There are two things to keep in mind when using the HDMI-EXTEND. The first is to make sure it is flipped the right way. There are clear labels by the HDMI ports that say either “input” or “output.” The cable coming from your Blu-ray, DVD, or other source goes into the input and the cable to your display goes into the output. The second thing is that this repeater works best with a maximum length of 60 feet from source to repeater and 45 feet from repeater to TV. Stay within those parameters and you’re sure to enjoy all of the perks of a solid HDMI signal.

These connectors can be used with most ordinary crimpers, but the full benefits can only be experienced when used with an EZ-RJ45 crimp tool.

The Difference

The initial steps for adding an EZRJ45 connector onto a Cat6 Ethernet cable is the same. You score the outer jacket and remove an inch and a half, snipping the pull thread to get it out of your way once you have enough of the conductors exposed. Untwist the pairs and line them up according to your chosen wiring diagram. Then, instead of measuring where you need to snip off the excess wire, you skip straight to inserting the cable into the connector. Thanks to the all-transparent pull-through design, you can quickly check to make sure the correct wire pin-out has been maintained by checking the wires that have come out the end of the connector and by looking into the body of the connector itself. Once everything is lined up properly, crimp the connector on. The EZ-RJ45 tool will crimp and cut away the extra wire all in one squeeze.

Vanco’s WP-SPRING-4 spring clip wall plate helps you banish the mess by providing an easy, attractive interface for running your wires through the wall. Spring clips are perhaps the easiest way to terminate speaker wire at a speaker, receiver, or wall plate such as this. To connect your wire to this plate, simply strip half an inch of insulation and give the bare wire a little twist. To open a spring clip, press down on the lever until the clip opens. Then insert your wire, let go of the lever, and you are done! To connect the speaker wire to the back of the plate, just strip the speaker wire and solder the wire to the easily accessed terminal.

Each speaker requires one red and one black connection, so this wall plate can handle two speakers. Installing the WP-SPRING-4 into your wall is straightforward and quick. It can attach directly to a single-gang box or low voltage bracket. The clips on this plate can accommodate speaker wire from 18-12 AWG. Which gauge you need depends largely on the distance you are running the wire so be sure to measure first.
