IR Extenders and Remotes 101: Part 1
Before we get started, let’s talk about what exactly IR is. IR stands for infrared, which is a form of light not visible to the naked eye (stop giggling). Most of our electronic equipment that uses a remote control has been built to pick up on these frequencies. For all intents and purposes, just know that our remotes shoot infrared light to our equipment; this light is then received and converted into electrical signals which our electronics can understand. Fancy, right? Now that you fully understand with expert knowledge how our remote controls boss our electronics around (a bunch of bullies if you ask me), let’s move on to why you would need an IR extender or repeater in your home theater set up.

Why You Need An IR Extender?

So dinner went well and your date comes inside for a cup of coffee when suddenly they look over at your entertainment center and quickly make an excuse to leave. You feel confused, how could this have happened? What went wrong? Then it hits you… your DVD player, cable box, Blu-ray player, PlayStation, Xbox, stereo receiver, and whatever else you hypothetically have on your hypothetical entertainment center is a complete disaster. Electronics are everywhere. You think to yourself, “I need to get an IR extender kit before I start dating again”. Now that you realize you’re going to be alone until you do something about that mess, let’s talk about your options. Our next segment will teach you to extend your signal like a pro.
