A home theater and advanced, digital speaker system define your entertainment experience. However, flush wall-mounted speakers are difficult to install and require advanced construction skills. When you want wall-mounted speakers
, consider using a wall-mounted shelf
. Most wall-mounted shelves can be installed in less than fifteen minutes, and you can select the ideal location and arrangement for each shelf’s placement. The process for installing wall-mounted shelves can be slightly complicated. If you have not installed wall-mounted shelves for speakers before, try using the following tips to make the process faster and easier.
1. Locate the Stud
The studs support the weight of the wall and anything attached to it. As a result, the studs are the most structurally sound aspect of a typical wall, and you need to try to attach the brackets to the studs. Lightly tap on the wall, and listen for a slight echo. You may also feel resistance when you hit a stud’s location. Alternatively, you may use an electronic sensor to identify the stud’s location. After you have found the studs, mark the location with a pencil.
2. Decide Between Stud or Hoist-Mounted Screws
If your shelves’ brackets do not align with your studs, you will need to use mounting anchors. These look like bolts with an expanding spring back. Drill a hole through the drywall, and insert the mounting anchor into the slot. Make sure the mounting anchor is designed to hold an additional 20 percent of the total shelf-weight, which includes the speaker’s weight.
3. Use a Battery-Operated Drill
A battery-operated drill reduces the chance of injury during shelf-installation. Furthermore, the reduced power allows you to ensure your drilled holes do not threaten the integrity of the stud and wall, which improves the overall quality of your work. Also, battery-operated drills are easy to work with when a power source is not available, especially when installing shelves for speakers near the top of vaulted ceilings.
4. Fit the Initial Bracket Before Drilling Other Holes
Holding the bracket, drill a hole through the top opening of the bracket. Then, you will drill the corresponding screw into the bracket and wall about three-quarters of the way. Using a digital or manual level, ensure the bracket is leveled correctly. Finish attaching the initial bracket. Hold the other brackets up to the wall in the level position, and mark the drill spots with your pencil. This will make sure your additional holes line up correctly and level.
5. Think About Your Speakers’ Wiring
If your speakers have plenty of wiring
, you can adjust the shelf height to be visually pleasing. However, you should always check the shelf-height versus the wire-length before installing the shelf. This will reduce the chances for error and the need to reinstall the shelf at a lower, alternative location. If you want to eliminate the wiring concerns altogether, consider using wireless speakers.
6. Flush Wired-Speakers With a Staple-Gun
If your speakers have wires, use a staple gun to make sure the wires do not become a danger to children, pets, or guests. Loose wires result in trips, slides, and damaged equipment. If the wires show naturally against your wall, consider painting the wires and shelves to match the color of your walls. No one will notice the difference, and the speakers will appear to float on the wall. Additionally, you should attach the wires to the shelf directly with the staple-gun. This will help keep the speaker from falling off the shelf in the event of an accident.
7. Only Tighten the Brackets’ Screws After All Brackets Have Been Installed
If you wait to tighten the screws, the brackets will offer more play to adjust to leveling needs. If you tighten screws prematurely, you run the risk of breaking your bit or stripping the screw’s head. Unfortunately, each of these problems renders the screw useless and require you to restart the process. Furthermore, an overly tightened screw can make inserting other screws more difficult, which lengthens the time and energy needed to install the shelf. By following these seven tips, you can reduce the amount of time you spend in installing shelves for speakers. Ultimately, you can get to listening to your music and watching your HD videos with superior sound faster and easier.
