The Stage is Set For 6
The next stage for the Gigabit Ethernet standard, category 6 cables offer improvements across the board over its predecessor, category 5. 550 Mhz of signal bandwidth, improved signal strength, and complete backwards compatibility are all features of this standard.
The increase from 350 Mhz to 550 Mhz allows for more data to pass in a given cycle--almost double that of the previous standard. This means that content rich data, such as multimedia, can pass freely without clogging the lanes for other data. With this larger bandwidth comes the ability to be utilized in the latest 10GBase-T (up to 55 meters) networks which provide 10 Gb/s data transmission.
The category 6 standard has improved signal strength via its lower insertion loss and reduction of interference. Techniques such as twisting every 0.5 inches and providing a physical divider of the wires, in certain cables, aids the signal to this end.
